Aetna cautions that Social Security numbers and other personal information were potentially compromised for 850 Ohioans after a compact disc (CD) consisting of sensitive data got lost in the mail.

The company declared today that the CD consisted of names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, health insurance group numbers and, in few cases, Social Security numbers.

Aetna is notifying those impacted in letters that also elaborate how to take advantage of free credit monitoring services and provides advice on how to guard against identity theft and fraud. They also have a toll-free number to call with extra queries: 866-760-9572.

The CD was mailed on the day of Sept. 6 by a worker of Aetna Signature Administrators, a division of Aetna, to another worker for archiving. The compact disc (CD) was reported missing from the envelop upon receipt Sept. 9. Aetna Signature Administration and the U.S. Postal Service both examined the tragedy but weren’t capable to find the item, in accordance to Aetna. However, it hasn’t been recovered, Aetna claimed that it has no reason to consider the information was or will be misused. In accordance to its investigation, the CD might have been discarded and ruined by the USPS, the company claimed.

Following this tragedy, Aetna said it has inquired third-party administrators to prevent sharing Social Security numbers and has retrained workers on procedures to secure data.
