UnitedHealthcare, Qualcomm announces latest wearables to wellness program

Health insurer UnitedHealthcare and Qualcomm Life, a health services subsidiary of telecommunications equipment provider Qualcomm, declared new enhancements to UnitedHealthcare Motion, a wellness program that gives workers with activity trackers and enables them to earn up to $1,500 each year by meeting certain aims for routinely activities.

The 2 companies first launched UnitedHealthcare Motion in the year of 2016 as a pilot in twelve states to opt employers, utilizing the Qualcomm Life’s 2net Platform for medical-grade connectivity. Following the victorious test, the program was expanded to forty states and will now involve access to extra customized activity trackers through a ‘bring-your-own-device’ (BYOD) model.

The Fitbit Charge 2 will be the latest activity tracker integrated and validated with 2net and UnitedHealthcare Motion in this BYOD model. The custom characteristic can be activated during the early 2017 on any Charge 2 device in market by any eligible program participant.

Wearables utilized in the UnitedHealthcare Motion program enable workers to earn up to $4 each day in credits based on F.I.T. goals, which stands for frequency of walking goals (6 times each day with 300 steps within 5 minutes at least 1 hour apart), intensity (3,000 steps within 30 minutes) and tenacity (10,000 complete steps per day).

Employers can get savings deployed on wellness program participants’ combined F.I.T. outcomes. People who consistently acquire the F.I.T. goals tend to make better their health and decrease their medical expenses, the companies claimed.

Qualcomm Life will give secure data transfer from the devices to the Motion app and to UnitedHealthcare. Qualcomm Life will also enable the BYOD model to permit the integration of more activity trackers into the 2net Platform and UnitedHealthcare Motion, offering participants with more choice. Integrated activity trackers will be customized to enable consumers to analyze on their wrists how they are tracking against the wellness program’s 3 daily F.I.T. goals.

UnitedHealth Group chief medical officer Richard Migliori, MD stated in a statement that the wellness program depicts the potential for connected health and wellness programs to benefit companies and workers alike.

“Wearable technology can assist encourage workers to walk each day and earn financial rewards at the similar time,” Migliori added.

The program is now available to self-funded employers with 5 or more eligible workers, and companies with completely insured health policies with 101 or more eligible workers.
