Cigna, Scripps Health Enters into an Alliance to Deliver Innovative Health Plans

Scripps Health and Cigna have stepped into an alliance to provide employers in and around San Diego integrated health care products and innovative health plans developed to make better access, quality and affordability while making the health care experience easier.

Effective on the day of April 1, 2017, Scripps and Cigna will jointly give HMO innovative health plans branded as Scripps Select HMO to employers with almost 100 workers. Employers can select a fully-insured plan, or they can select for other funding arrangements.

The alliance contract involves pay-for-value incentives that motivate quality care, innovative health plans and suitable use of resources. The ultimate aim is to make better the health outcomes and give sustained affordability and value for employers and their workers.

“With providers, payers, employers and people working together, Scripps and Cigna are forming an innovative health care model that boosts care coordination to acquire common targets – better health, more affordability and a perfect patient experience,” claimed Chris Van Gorder, president and CEO of Scripps.

“Our joint approach to health care is unique from a conventional one because it is deployed on very close integration between Cigna and Scripps Health,” stated Gene Rapisardi, president and general manager for Cigna’s Southern California and Nevada markets. “We’ve a unified intention – to put the consumers we serve at the center of all we do, and assist them to access affordable and personalized care. We identify that health care is local, so our aim is to develop the premier local plan that exceeds the expectations of San Diego employers and their employees.”

Rapisardi pointed out that while the Scripps Select HMO plans offer health care coverage within the San Diego area, local employers with workforces in several markets have the choice to buy additional coverage through Cigna; for instance, a San Diego employer with employees based in Sacramento or Dallas would be capable to cover those employees.

Plans sold through the alliance involve nurse case management, medical, pharmacy, behavioral health, and health coaching services. Employers also have the choice to add Cigna dental and vision policies, as well as group life and disability plans.

Care coordination and health improvement programs are vital components of the latest model. People will benefit from simpler navigation when care is required, new tools for health and wellness and better access to clinicians. The target is to realize long-term, sustainable savings while assisting individuals to achieve better health and greater satisfaction with their health care services.

The new Scripps Select HMO plans will give access to the complete range of Scripps facilities and its affiliated physicians, involving Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, Scripps Green Hospital, Scripps Mercy Hospital campuses in Chula Vista and San Diego and Prebys Cardiovascular Institute; as well as Scripps Clinics and Scripps Coastal Medical Centers, specialty centers, Scripps home health and hospice services and Scripps HealthExpress. In addition, Scripps Physicians Medical Group and Mercy Physicians Medical Group are contracted providers.

Cigna and Scripps already have a strong track record of working together victoriously through Cigna Collaborative Care, a value-based reimbursement arrangement to reward doctors for better quality and cost that launched in the time period of early 2015.
